Isabelle Adjani Biography.....A radiant dark-haired beauty, with full lips and china blue eyes, Isabelle Adjani is one of the biggest stars in France and is the only one to have ever won four Cesars. Of Algerian/German parentage, Paris-born Adjani grew up loving poetry and theater. She made her film at age 14 in Le Petit Bougnat, after two seasons in amateur and semi-professional stage productions. At age 17, she was permitted to join the prestigious Comedie Française, where she drew excellent audience and critical response performing the classics. Adjani had signed a 20 year contract with the troupe, but then broke it a short time later to pursue her film career. The controversy surrounding her action would be the first of many in Adjani's career. In 1974, she appeared in La Gifle and won the prestigious Prix Suzanne Bianchetti for "Most Promising Actress." Adjani became a bona-fide star in 1975, after director François Truffault cast her as the tormented daughter of Victor Hugo in The Story of Adele H, which earned her an Oscar nomination and worldwide acclaim. She won the "Best Actress" at Cannes in 1981 and her first Cesar for her performance in Possession. With the release of her next film L'Ete Meurtrier in 1983, Adjani again caused controversy. Despite her difficulties with the press, Adjani has continued racking up excellent screen portrayals and industry awards ever since; one of her best performances was the title role in Camille Claudel (1988), directed by Adjani's former longtime companion (and father of her son) Bruno Nuytten; it was the first film that she produced herself. She won her third Cesar for her role in the film.
