A woman desperate to change her life takes a wrong turn into danger and degradation in this drama. In 1924, Stephanie (Mathilda May) is travelling to Buenos Aires with her husband, who is considerably older than her and in poor health. Stephanie is not happy with her life, so when a young woman named Alba falls overboard and drowns, Stephanie assumes her identity once the ship arrives in Argentina. Stephanie realizes that this was a terrible mistake when she learns that Alba was the mail-order bride of Zico (Esai Morales), a notorious pimp and mobster who puts her to work in a brothel that he operates with his family. A terrified Stephanie kills her first customer and is soon on the run from the police; she finds that she must return to Zico's criminal family for protection, where she is placed at the mercy of Cholo (Vincent D'Onofrio), the sensuous-but-brutal "King of the Tango." Naked Tango reunited Leonard Schrader and David Weisman, who had worked together as screenwriter and producer on the international hit Kiss of the Spider Woman. -- Mark Deming

"Leonard Schrader's directorial debut is in fact one of the most indulgent and overtly gorgeous films yet seen on the big screen. The traditional path of the captive coming to adore her captor raises its ugly head but stifling this is the sheer beauty of the set, design and costumes and breathtaking ambition of Schrader's vision.
In Naked Tango the plot mostly consists of what will happen to our heroes and heroines. In the underworld of Buenos Aires everyone is constantly in danger and Stephanie is in more than most. The film takes its title from the machismo associated with the Tango. Many of the villains end up dancing as insults and challenges to their rivals and all said the film itself can be considered equally in the light of a ballet rather than a piece of celluloid. The film's only statement is that of beauty. The whole of the film is taken up with who loves who? What is the way to win a persons heart? The beauty of danger and the beauty of battle. Schrader has taken on a massive gamble for his debut and it has worked. In Naked Tango he has created one of the most awesome pieces of cinematic work seen for decades. Beautiful, gorgeous and thoroughly dangerous."

"A coupling of violence and death, agony and ecstasy, and the Tango! Naked Tango is brilliantly casted and directed. Chollo, the unlikely romantic, is both sensuous and cruel. Stephanie, after her incredible transformation into Alba, is stunningly beautiful and dangerous in her own right. The tension between the two of them will keep you watching until the bitter-sweet ending. Violence, pleasure, death, ecstasy: all surround the mysterious world of Chollo and his charismatic and seductive Tango. Set in a corrupt 1920s Argentina, Chollo, Stephanie (Alba), and the unwitting match-maker Zico, discover that life is not what it seems and people are not always who they say they are. The stage design is exemplary; the costume design is perfect; the acting is incredible. This movie is a must see for those drawn to the darker side of love and lust. Moonlight yellow and scarlet red sneaking away from the shadows. It emphasizes the soul of tango. If you love tango, like I do, don't miss this film."
